Mary Kelly: Projects, 1973-2010

I attended the Mary Kelly exhibition at the Whitworth Art Gallery. The layout of the exhibition was bare and exposed and the artist was very particular about placing things on the walls so she only displayed the title and year of the artwork. The exhibition was a combination of white, black and Grey with spotlights highlighting all the work. I found the ‘Habitus, 2010’ most intriguing because it demonstrates and recounts memories of the generation born during and after World War 2. The structure of the mock up is of an Anderson home shelter that was massed produced because of the air raids in the War. The text can be read by looking down underground into its mirrored floor, which talks about the; Holocaust, Hiroshima and the Vietnam War.
