Portfolio Visit - Lizzy Hoaksey

Lizzy hoskey is a freelance designer who has kindly gave me a portfolio visit about my early development that consists of a mixture of pattern samples and finished pieces. As you can see below:

She first comments that she really likes the design and how it demonstrates a modern version on the coasters that are currently around. I also mentioned that this is heat sensitive where the pattern is black but once it has a hot cup placed on top, the around where the heat is will change colour slightly. When I asked where I can make improvements she remarks, that maybe playing with different designs and colours could make it more interesting and diverse

With this print she was instantly reminded of Jackson Pollack, where the marks are both chaotic but controlled at the same time. She said that maybe stitch into this pattern and pushes it even further, maybe it will look as a wallpaper or stationary.

Jackson Pollock

She mentioned that this pattern is quite aggressive with the staggered lines and angled lines which make this pattern both powerful but overwhelming she comments by saying maybe instead of printing the pattern twice maybe just do a single pattern. She also mentions that it remembers her of a short story entitled – ‘Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’. This story was based in the 1899 where a women who had depression was sent away to receive help and was put in to a room where it has a creepy yellow floral wallpaper, where she describes how the wallpaper came to life which in return made her crazy. Therefore with that in mine she mentions that if the pattern was scaled down on smaller item such as ceramics/stationary would work really well together, cause if it was a large item it could be seen as harsh or imitating.

She establish that this was her favourite pattern with how much detail comes across and soft edges. She mentions that the knitted pattern and the Jackson Pollock style pattern works well together.
