Work experince at Rag Doll

Rag Doll is a small boutique that has been established for 6 years and specialises in quirky and bold designs interiors including; upholstery, curtains, blinds and curtains as well as costume design, they have a diverse cliental from TV work to designing furnishing for the home.

I chose this company to approach due to the huge range of qualities and was inspired by the way she constantly uses recycling within her work. In relation to my work I felt like it would be a perfect opportunity to gain work experience and find out how they started up the company and develop my knowledge of upholstery and furnishings. I have done a day’s work experience within Rag Doll.
On my first day I didn’t know really what to expect, I was a combination of nerves and excited. I was observing them upholstering a chair, where they showed me different ways of securing the fabric as well as decorating the chair. I also go to grips on their designing by asking a few questions:
Where do your inspirations come from?
Nature and the shapes and patterns that it creates

How did you get started?
I have always had a passion for sewing since high school and have worked in a number of different sewing establishments, until I decided to start up my own business.

How do you start your design process?
I constantly draw and either transfers it to illustrator or make a mini mock up of my design.

Who is your target market?

My target market would have to be people who want something different and unique.

What advertisement have you done?
I began by doing leaflets which was about 6 years ago and ever since then are advertisement has been word of mouth and pasting trade and we have always been rushed off are feet.

In reflection to my experience, I have gained a better understanding of a setting up a business and hands one experience with upholstery. However, I would also like to do work experience into a more graphic design atmosphere. Nevertheless, I have a better idea of what I want to do when finishing my degree.
