Broadstone Mill Visit

My grounds for visiting Broadstone Mill in stockpot was because I heard there were an open gallery where there are assortment of studio spaces for Artist/designers, that is open to the public daily, selling a range of items such as; greeting cards, jewellery, paintings, illustrations, upholstery and furnishings, textile art and re-cycled fashion. I decided to go because I thought it would be a good chance to converse with other Artist/designers about their work and gather research about applying for studio space after leaving university.

I found the studios had easy access as they were on the first floor, the layout of the studios were open plan with a combination of large and small studios ranging from different prices.

My attention was initially directed to a designer called ‘Former Glory - Reloved Vintage Furnishings’, she specialises in re-upholsters, re-painting and re-loves old and tired pieces of furniture and furnishings; creating new, unique and handcrafted pieces for the home or commercial spaces.

In my opinion, I found her work had a stylish and fashionable approach. However, I was most influenced by the way she restores classic furnishings, instead of using new furnishings as most designers do, it was a nice change to see retro furnishings have a contemporary twist. I sense this would a appeal to a young and trendy demographic.

In reflection of my visit to the open studios, I feel this was be a good occasion to talk to designers and build my confidence up about discussing my work. In addition some designers have also agreed to give me feedback about my work, which is exciting. Nevertheless, I would like a studio here, as the atmosphere is laid-back and they have a large amount of activities to showcase work of such as; exhibitions and the fact that it is open up to the public daily so there is constant selling potential.
